چکیده

In multitasking real-time systems, the choice of scheduling algorithm is an important factor to ensure that response time requirements are met while maximising limited system resources. Two popular scheduling algorithms include fixed priority (FP) and earliest deadline first (EDF). While they have been studied in great detail before, they have not been compared when taking into account cache related pre-emption delays (CRPD). Memory and cache are split into a number of blocks containing instructions and data. During a pre-emption, cache blocks from the pre-empting task can evict those of the pre-empted task. When the pre-empted task is resumed, if it then has to re-load the evicted blocks, CRPD are introduced which then affect the schedulability of the task. In this paper we compare FP and EDF scheduling algorithms in the presence of CRPD using the state-of-the-art CRPD analysis. We find that when CRPD is accounted for, the performance gains offered by EDF over FP, while still notable, are diminished. Furthermore, we find that under scenarios that cause relatively high CRPD, task layout optimisation techniques can be applied to allow FP to schedule tasksets at a similar processor utilisation to EDF. Thus making the choice of the task layout in memory as important as the choice of scheduling algorithm. This is very relevant for industry, as it is much cheaper and simpler to adjust the task layout through the linker than it is to switch the scheduling algorithm. 2012 ACM Subject Classification Software and its engineering, Software organization and properties, Software functional properties, Correctness, Real-time schedulability

Accounting for Cache Related Pre-emption Delays in Hierarchical Scheduling with Local EDF Scheduler

Hierarchical scheduling provides a means of composing multiple real-time applications onto a single processor such that the temporal requirements of each application are met. This has become a popular technique in industry as it allows applications from multiple vendors as well as legacy applications to co-exist in isolation on the same platform. However, performance enhancing features such as ...

Pre-emption cost aware response time analysis for fixed priority pre-emptive systems

Without the use of cache the increasing gap between processor and memory speeds in modern embedded microprocessors would have resulted in memory access times becoming an unacceptable bottleneck. In such systems, cache related preemption delays can be a significant proportion of task execution times. To obtain tight bounds on the response times of tasks in pre-emptively scheduled systems, it is ...

Analysis of Probabilistic Cache Related Pre-emption Delays for Systems with Random Cache Replacement Policies

This paper integrates analysis of probabilistic cache related pre-emption delays (pCRPD) and static probabilistic timing analysis (SPTA) for multipath programs running on a hardware platform that uses an evict-on-miss random cache replacement policy. The SPTA computes an upper bound on the probabilistic worst-case execution time (pWCET) of the program, which is an exceedance function giving the...

Global Fixed Priority Scheduling with Deferred Pre-emption Revisited

This paper introduces schedulability analysis for global fixed priority scheduling with deferred pre-emption (gFPDS) for homogeneous multiprocessor systems. gFPDS is a superset of global fixed priority pre-emptive scheduling (gFPPS) and global fixed priority non-pre-emptive scheduling (gFPNS). We show how schedulability can be improved via appropriate choice of priority assignment and final non...

Comparison of Empirical Success Rates of Global vs. Partitioned Fixed-Priority and EDF Scheduling for Hard Real Time TR-050601

Improvements in schedulability tests for global fixed-priority and EDF scheduling in a homogeneous multiprocessor (symmetric multiprocessing) environment have shown that the worst-case guaranteed achievable utilization levels for global EDF scheduling equals what can be achieved with partitioned scheduling, and both ways of applying EDF scheduling out-perform fixed-priority scheduling, for sets...
